The Sardinia Project

Collaborating Groups

The Project, supported by the NIA, includes 3 major interacting groups:

  1. A group of collaborating scientists in the Intramural Program of the Institute,
    with Dr. David Schlessinger as Project Officer. The group provides tests and expertise for the quantitative traits that have been the focus of the Project thus far. Major participants have included

    • Drs. Edward Lakatta, Samer Najjar, and Angelo Scuteri, experts in cardiovascular tests and in training and quality control for the study.
    • Drs. Paul Costa and Antonio Terracciano, from the Laboratory of Personality and Cognition, experts in personality traits;
    • Dr. Alan Zonderman, Laboratory of Personality and Cognition, expert in cognition tests and in data handling for large-scale projects.

  2. The Progenia Team, in Sardinia. The work of the team is funded by a contract to the Italian National Research Council, and specifically to the Institute of Neurogenetics and Neuropharmacology in Cagliair, Sardinia, headed by Professor Antonio Cao. The Project was implemented by Dr. Giuseppe Pilia, who set up the team in a newly-furbished clinic in the town of Lanusei. After his untimely death in 2005, Dr. Manuela Uda has taken over the direction of the team. The team comprises physicians, nurses, psychologists, biologists, bioinformatics/computer specialists, receptionists - all Sardinian, and nearly all from the region where the Project data are being collected. The team members now include Marco Orru (heading up a group of cardiologists), and a team of technical staff comprising Giuseppe Albai, Mariano Dei, Sandra Lai, Gianluca Usala, Monica Lai, Paola Loi, Manila Deiana, Nazario Olla, and Marco Masala

  3. The Statistical Genetics collaborators at the University of Michigan. Also funded by contract funds from NIA, includes Dr. Weimin Chen and Dr. Serena Sanna, working under the direction of Dr. Goncalo Abecasis.
